SHELF EDGE HIGHWAY RUN
CANYONS 2000

About 40 intrepid pelagic birders departed from Galilee, Rhode Island, in the evening of August 26, aboard the 80' party boat, the 7B's V, for an overnight run to the continental shelf. This trip was organized by Charles Avenengo; Wayne Petersen provided narration and spotting. After a very smooth night's ride, we ventured out over the continental shelf in the vicinity of Atlantis Canyon and then gradually birded our way back toward Port Judith. This was a trip concentrating on quality rather than quantity (as noted by Wayne) and the avian stars of the show were 3 juvenile Long-tailed Jaegers.

Here are some photographic highlights (click on images for larger versions - note, large (40-100k) images):

Cory's Shearwater

Greater Shearwater

juvenile Long-tailed Jaeger - pale morph

Mahi-mahi (dolphin-fish), subsequently released

Of course, there was a bit of waiting in between sightings...

A stir in the group! It's one of several Mola mola (ocean sunfish) seen

We were joined by a pod of about 50 Bottlenosed Dolphins, here shown "bow riding."

Juvenile Long-tailed Jaeger -another, slightly darker, pale morph bird

Sorting out jaegers is tough - Wayne provides some pointers
